Zimbabwe is a presidential republic in which the President is head of state and head of government. President Emmerson Mnangagwa of ZANU-PF won a second term in August 2023. On 7 July 2026 he signed the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 3) Act. It lengthens presidential and parliamentary terms from five to seven years, extending the current terms to 2030. It also provides for future presidents to be elected by a joint sitting of Parliament rather than by popular vote. Opposition parties, civil society groups and some lawyers argue that the changes required a national referendum, and court challenges have been filed. On the economy, the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency was introduced in April 2024. In April 2026 the IMF approved a 10-month Staff-Monitored Program aimed at consolidating stabilisation and building a track record toward a possible financing programme. Inflation fell to 4.4 per cent in March 2026. Arrears clearance and debt resolution remain priorities. Zimbabwe is a member of SADC, COMESA and the AfCFTA.
